May 4th was Free Comic Book Day. Did you get yours? I hope, at least, that the Fourth was with you. Oh, what perfect timing for a free comic. It’s kind of big deal in our household. My hubby is wild about comics. So off we went.
You know you are in the right place when the Dark Side is there to welcome you.
And it’s quite festive inside.
Perhaps you would like some of these offerings…
Or these…
These were hubby’s favorites. We don’t need any glittery Hollywood endings. No, sir. I apologize for the glare.
If these aren’t enough you can always go through the back issues. This resembles our closet because who needs stinking clothes when you have comic books. Hubby has been collecting for decades.
Personally, I enjoyed The Remainz. This would be “The Rocking Dead.” Don’t leave home without your head, because you will miss it and will have a hard time relocating it. Trust me on this.
I know you’re excited now.
In the spirit of the day, I saw Iron Man 3 with my kids. I won’t review it here, because I would probably spoil it for you. I will just say that I loved it and, of course, I loved Robert Downey Jr., and Guy Pearce was a lovely villain. I will also tell you that there was one part when I just gasped because I could barely contain myself, and had you been there with me, you would have thought I was ridiculous and would have been greatly embarrassed to be seen with me.
There is a cookie at the end, and if you decide to stay for it (it’s good), you will see the extraordinarily long list of people who worked on Digital Effects. It’s one of the longest I’ve ever seen. You’ll also learn that parts of the movie were shot in North Carolina, and there’s a company called “Eargasm.” I’m not entirely sure what a Depth Editor does either.
My movie bubble burst when I went to the restroom and waited desperately for the paper towel to auto-dispense. Surely, it should just shoot out and grab my arm. Tony Stark, he’s so hot, so smart, sexy….Alas, Tony Stark is merely a fantasy. Dammit.
Well, here’s a smart and sexy song for you, a little chill music to round out your weekend. This song just makes me want to choreograph a dance. I hope you have a great rest of your weekend!
LOL This reminds me that I was getting frisky with Iron man in a dream last night.

Ha ha! I may have that same dream tonight, if I’m lucky, Becca.

I can’t say that comics really do it for me! Free Comic Book Day must be an international thing then because a friend of mine here in the UK posted on Facebook that she’d spent the day in costume helping out at a local comic book store giving out free comics, I thought it was just some promotion at that store, I had no idea it was a big international day! THAT’S how out of touch I am with the world of comic books.
And I haven’t see any of the Iron Man movies, am I missing out? If you say I am, then I will trust you and catch up with the first two on Netflix.

Vanessa,
The first one is entertaining. It is what it is, AND it has Robert Downey Jr. The second one is, well… a sequel…

Vanessa, I didn’t realize it was an international thing either until yesterday! But, it makes perfect sense for it to be an international event. My husband has been talking about it for months and we go every year as a family.
I love Iron Man. He’s the intelligent Superhero and, as I said, I love Robert Downey Jr. I highly recommend it. Of course, it is a Superhero movie so you must suspend belief and just enjoy, and stuff blows up. Also, you don’t need to watch them sequence or anything….you’ll be able to follow along. I’m truly amazed what they can accomplish with special effects. Unbelievable!

I expect that Iron Man will be one of those movies that I keep putting off watching because I don’t feel like it, but then when I finally get around to watching it, I’ll love it! I’ve done that before with things like this, because it’s a category of film I don’t generally go for, so I think I’m not going to like it. I’ll let you know what I think when I do!

It’ s a way over the top kind of movie! It’s actually not my usual either, but since I have kids I go. Iron Man I like because of Robert Downey Jr. I think you’ll like it…at the very least, it is entertaining.

Comic books are awesome. This post makes me want to go buy one. My husband confessed that he has a man crush on Guy Pearce. I’ll stick to Robert Downy Jr. 😉 I love Iron Man and I cannot wait to see this new one.

Comic books are awesome. Audra. There are so many great stories to be had. You’ll have to go get your fix now. Guy Pearce is very talented and you almost can’t recognize him in this movie. I’m with you. Robert Downey never disappoints me. You’ll love this movie! The special effects are amazing, too.

All those comics, wow, they would have to drag me out. A friend of mine collects comics like your husband, he has an entire room neatly filled with them from floor to ceiling, I mean an actual room, no kidding, which he has converted into his own private comic wonderland.

J.D. I’m not surprised about your friend at all! I wish my husband could have his own room. That would be perfect. We are kind of running out of space. Comic books are great though, so many great stories! Now Hollywood can actually recreate them. They’re so believable!

Amy,
Love that you enjoyed Free Comic Book Day. We came back with 19 books. Kids loved it. And Andrew Bird is magnificent™! Mostly his early stuff, but that’s just me!

Le Clown,
Free Comic Book Day is somewhat of a tradition in our family. It’s fun and the kids have a great time. Comic books are magical, wouldn’t you say? I’m new to Andrew Bird and I’m digging this song! I have yet to really check out all his stuff, but I will.

I had not heard about Free Comic Book Day, but it sounds fun. Comics are really big over here, although they are much different than over there (like Japanese manga) and you can rent them for 30 cents a day from corner stores. I did see Iron Man 3 and thought it was awesome. I love the comedic moments in it.

Interesting idea to rent comic books, and for 30 cents a day. I think people wouldn’t give them back or that they might destroy them. Maybe I underestimate people. I bet they are big over there. Iron Man, what’s not to love, right?

Over here, it’s pretty common so I guess it works. They have your phone number and address, just like renting DVDs so they know where to find you. Over here as well, when you order delivery food, like Chinese food, they bring real dishes to your house and you just put them outside your door when you’re done and the restaurant comes and gets them. Another thing I don’t think would really work well in America. 🙂

David, that’s just wild about the real dishes! Comic books are one thing. That one I can visualize and see working. The dishes definitely wouldn’t fly here. I’d like to hear about all these different ways of life. Sounds like a very interesting post, huh huh…what do you think?

It’s funny; after I wrote that comment I thought the same thing; I should write some posts about unique aspects of Korean culture like that, stuff that doesn’t make the guidebooks and whatnot. Actually, I was planning one for tomorrow anyway, all about Korean bullfighting. It’s much different from the Spanish variety. I’ll give you the full scoop tomorrow 😉

We missed Free Comic Book Day but we are looking forward to Comic Con in Niagara Falls in June. I haven’t seen the new Iron Man yet but I do have a think for Robert Downey Jr. as the character. He can even make a bad sequel watchable.
Loved the tune, I shall be replaying it through out the day.

Oh, the Niagara Falls Comic Con. I bet that’s fun! My husband had a hand in the early beginnings of the San Diego Comic Con before it got big. He even had a glass of wine with Neil Gaiman. Will you see Robert from The Hook at this Niagara Falls convention? He talks about it on his blog sometimes.
Don’t you love Robert Downey Jr….love him! He never disappoints me. I dig this song, too. Glad you like it!

I’m all about comic books. I think it started with my crush on Thor. I love x-men, specifically Gambit, and Cyclops, even Wolverine can do it for me sometimes. Iron man, Yes please. lol, Comic books are awesome but you almost have to go back to the beginning to know the history of each person. I also read Archie comic books when I was young.
Fun post!!!

Lisa, there’s a new Thor movie coming out this summer! I have a feeling you’ll like it. Iron Man does it for me…I think Robert Downey Jr. has something to do with it. I’ll admit I don’t know all the histories about the superheroes, which is why I like going to see these movies with hubby, who understands them so well. He can tell me….yeah, they did it right or not. Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.

Amy, My ex had a stupendous comics collection that I afforded him. I have my own stash in the attic. I was informed yesterday that there’s a store just opened up in the town 15 minutes away. Will cruise it with my 8 year old. We have a pizza box code thing to get a ticket to the Iron Man movie. It’s OK for kids I heard. So glad that Robert Downey Jr. didn’ t off himself when he went through that “what authority?” phase. Because that MF is talented. I remember him playing the piano in the Ally McBeal episode and singing the Joanie Mitchell’s River. Crying. Now I’m going to listen to your music offering since we have similar tastes.
Love,
Shalagh

I hope you like the new comic book store. I’ve always enjoyed Robert Downey Jr. I think he’s really talented, besides being easy on the eyes. My kids loved the movie. It’s so over the top, but hey he’s a superhero. I find it incredible how believable they can make everything now. I wonder if kids growing up now think superheroes really exist. Let me know if you like the music!

I’ve always thought Robert Downey Jr. was a pretty talented actor, so… I’m kind of embarrassed to admit I haven’t seen any of the Ironman movies. Now that I think about it, I really haven’t seen many ‘SuperHero-ish’ movies in general… hmm… I really have no idea why that is, either! Kind of bizarre!
🙂

Well, if you see any type of Superhero-ish type of movie, I recommend the Iron Man ones. They’re probably at the tippy top of my list. He’s the intelligent superhero, which I think is pretty cool. Of course, they’re way over the top and so believable now with all the special effects. I think you would like it.
