Just because. . .floss, bitty cars, and sleep positions

I am excited about flossing my teeth. Just because only now I understand the fuss now about scraping your teeth, about getting in between your teeth, coming up one side and tugging on it there, and then, flipping to the other side, and tugging it some more. I am amused by this, and yes, you should be worried about me.

My kitty enjoys the floss as much as me. It’s the invisible toy, and useful too, if it gets caught up in her teeth. It’s a dual-purpose toy. Note: No animal or human was harmed in this photo..

Now,she's mad with delight. Easy, tiger.
Now possessed…mad with delight!

Now, when I think of floss, I am reminded of the opening of “Dexter” when he is flossing his teeth. I am binge watching a show that began eight years ago. But it’s still good…so good, I drew a picture about it, watching the show on the iPad; it’s like my own private television and it’s pure joy.

See my feet there at the end? Of course, it sits a little higher. Close enough, right?

As a family, we have been writing together. We take turns to pick a topic, write a bit and then draw a picture. Isn’t that swell?

Daddy's drawing of mommy in a bathing suit. I don't know what the topic was.
Daddy’s drawing of mommy in a bathing suit.  I am looking buff. I’m not sure how he came to draw this exactly. Something to do with devices.

Here I am again floating above the...trees?
But there’s no mistaking this inspiration.

It’s this:

Oh, to float above the trees. Just think of it.

No, it cannot be. We must drive around in these things.

All I could even find was a small picture. I’ve always wondered what it feels to drive such a small vehicle. I got my wish last weekend. We did not want our car to blow up, so we rented a car, the cheapest possible. This was it, ladies and gentlemen. It was a boxy, little rocket. It was zippy and great fun, albeit not much leg room. Four of us in there.

When we returned to our four-door sedan, it felt like a luxury liner where I might sleep comfortably. Never had I thought such a thing before.

I tried to sleep in the boxy Fiat because I got no sleep the night before. This was just because my husband provided stats on sleep positions right before we settled in. He tells me this: 79% of people sleep on their side, 10% on their backs, and even less sleep on their tummies. That probably doesn’t add up. You get the idea.

So, the best possible sleep position not the one that everyone is mostly doing – on the side. No, we all do it wrong. The best sleep position is to sleep on your back; this is said to be better for your back and creates less sag.

Who can do this? I can only sleep on my back if I’m really exhausted or drugged. Every time I felt relaxed, I realized I was sleeping wrong and tried to sleep on my back. It was a long night. The real question is, how can you ever know what position you sleep in, if you’re asleep? Unless, of course, you record yourself sleeping. Would you watch yourself sleep to find out? I mean, even if you can’t control the position you sleep in? Don’t think too hard about it.

Let me just ask you what position you think you sleep in? Do you like little cars? They get great gas mileage. Do you floss every night? Well, you should. Just because.

  1. Only one person I know can sleep on their back albeit for me it is the main person in my life! Personally, I really can’t. It is uncomfortable at best and hard to breathe at worse, I have asthma so if I can’t breathe, I can’t sleep and living gets hard too! So I always sleep on my sides. Maybe once a month I wake in the middle of the night as I have a bit of a dead leg if I don’t move through the night.

I can also sleep quite well on my front with just my head turned sideways. All this talk of bed and it is only 9am here. I know its bad to wish the day away but….

    1. Well, I imagine you’re sleeping comfortably now, Stephen. I hope so. It’s funny that even sleep is something you can do wrong. I mean can’t we just be. I tried to sleep on my back and it was impossible! I guess some people can do it. I wonder what their secret is. Sweet dreams, Stephen.

  2. I love cats so much more than dogs. And I’m stuck with a dog because I was outvoted. Consider that a proper metaphor for how the rest of my life is run.

At night, I flop around like a fish on the dock trying to find his way back to the ocean. It’s not pleasant for the person laying next to me, I can tell you that.

    1. Yay! Another cat lover. I know I shouldn’t be posting pictures of my cat. I feel like I’m violating the blogging rules. But it’s summer and she’s playing with floss. And, look at her?! She’s like a tiger in that photo. I hope you can get a cat. I really think you should. I can’t imagine my life without them. We have three!

That’s funny…flip flopping like a fish back to the sea. Oh no! Maybe you should have a water bed. Would that help? My sleep feels really restless lately, or it really probably is most of the time, too. Why is so hard?

  3. I am a back sleeper. I like little cars (not that I anticipate ever owning one again since I take the subway everywhere). And I am regular flosser. Judging from this comment, I am also excruciatingly dull.

    1. Oh, nonsense! I hang on to your every word, even if it is about floss and little cars. It was me that asked you to comment about that. But, by all means, if you would like to talk about anything else, you know you can anytime. You can comment freely here! Do you miss having a car? It would nice to not have to bother with one. They kind of rule your life when they start having problems.

  4. I’m a side sleeper, and a restless one at that. I flip around more than a dolphin. But what I really want to know is, how can I get those biceps you’ve got in that picture? Talk about a gun show. 😉

    1. I’m a side sleeper, too, and I imagine I flop around. I wake up a couple times a night. We must be water babies. We belong in the sea. I’ve been working out, but I really, I don’t look like this. I want to say, “Who is this girl? Who is she?” Ha ha. 🙂

  5. So many subjects….LOL! I sleep on my side, but like Exile, I flop around like a fish. My poor hubby. We sleep in separate beds so many nights, even if we start out together 😦
I do not floss like I should, but I know it’s a good practice (so the dentist says) but I brush 2 or 3 times a day, which is also good.
As for small cars, I think Fiats are the cutest things EVER! But I would never own one or one of the smart cars unless it was to run around in my neighborhood like a golf cart. They scare me to death. Did you see on the news where vandals went through San Francisco and turned all the little cars upside down or on their sides just because THEY COULD?? *groan*
Love the drawings and Netflix comes in handy when you are bed ridden. I had the flu back at Christmas week (yeah it sucked big time) but I used my iPad and watched every episode of the first 3 seasons of Downton Abby so I could be caught up in Jan for Season 4! 🙂

    1. A side sleeper, too. Well, Courtney, you are not alone. I can see why people have the separate room arrangement, if if means getting some sleep. It’s a tough one.
I always hear it from my hygienist about flossing. Now, I hope I can improve, since I feel like my technique is better! I feel like I’m losing it, really.
I had no idea that happened in San Francisco. Wow!! I don’t think we could have rented that car had I known. Like you, I don’t think I could own one with a family. My kids are little now, so it’s the only reason we fit at all. In two or three years, we wouldn’t!
I love Netflix! It’s the best. They make binge-watching easy when there are only seconds between each episode. We don’t have a second TV, but it works just fine! It’s perfect for catching up on shows. I haven’t watched Downtown Abby, either. Another one I hear is really good. 🙂

  6. I normally sleep on my side or tummy. I can’t get comfortable on my back. As for the car…I have a Cavalier and me and the twins can barely fit into it. I couldn’t imagine trying to fit us all in THAT itty bitty Fiat.

    1. I wish I could sleep on my back, TD, but I tried. It’s not worth a sleepless night! I know what you mean about this tiny car. The only reason we all fit was because my kids are still pretty small. In a couple of years, we wouldn’t fit into this car at all. Besides, it kind of made me motion sick!

  7. Amy, I sleep on my back, own a little car, don’t floss… and fly often. OK, I’m asleep when I fly (and I haven’t done it for a while) but don’t feel like I’m on my back when I do that.

    1. First of all. thank you for answering all of my questions. I really didn’t expect anyone to answer anything! Good for you for sleeping on your back. You are doing the right and healthy thing! I wish I could sleep while on a flight. I would seem easy to do. It can be kind of soothing to fly if wasn’t for all the interruptions. I’m glad you can get in some healthy shut eye.

  8. I sleep on my back and don’t move all night (I must look dead!) LOL I also floss twice a day (now I’m sounding like a goody-two-shoes). I don’t like small cars but am willing to take anything at the moment considering some unknown ratbag stole my car and crashed it 😦

    1. Oh, Dianne, how do you sleep on your back? I think you do need to have some kind of zombie zen to do that! I applaud you. And, twice a day floss. Wow, I’m not up to that level yet. I am so sorry to hear that your car was stolen and crashed!! Oh, no!! I hope insurance can take care of it. That’s horrible.

  9. My kitty likes the floss as well, and it terrifies me because I keep thinking he’s going to swallow it and then it’ll get all twisted up in his intestines and we’ll have to operate to get it out. 😦

    1. Singlegirlie, this has crossed my mind. Perhaps, she shouldn’t play with the floss anymore. We try to be careful, but look at her. She’s easily carried away. I’ll have to floss in private from now on.

  10. 1. No one ever sleeps on their back unless they are drunk and pass out that way?
    2. I’ve recently started getting into flossing too. Mainly because my dentist said my front teeth will fall out soon if I don’t! But they honestly do feel a lot cleaner afterwards, don’t they?
    3. Love the Netflix illustration.

      1. Exactly! This is definitely true for me.
      2. Oh no, please keep flossing. I don’t want your teeth to fall out. I always get in trouble for my bad flossing. I’m trying to improve, see.
      3. Thank you! I’m proud of it myself.
Good to see you, Sean. Are you enjoying your summer?

    1. Oh no, not the dentist! Tell him to go away, Jim. Tell him I said so, too! I kind of thought you might like the Fiat. I imagine everyone driving a little car over there in your neck of the woods. Is that true?

  11. I can only fall asleep on my back if I’m exhausted. Quite what position I’m in while I’m asleep – well obviously I have no idea.

I like little cars too, mostly because I can’t manoeuvre or park large cars 🙂 Thought to be honest, a Ford Fiesta isn’t as dinky as it used to be. My 2013 Fiesta is certainly a lot larger than my first car (a 1985 Fiesta).

    1. Right. I mean you might know what position you start in and what position you end up in…but this doesn’t meat that’s the position you were in all night! I’m guessing I’m a side sleeper anyway.

I usually like the compact myself, although not quite as little as the Fiat. 🙂 That little car packed some punch though for being so little. That’s interesting that your compact car has stretched a bit. And, you’re a dedicated to the same brand. Hey, why switch when you’re happy? That makes sense, especially when it lasted you so long. That’s quite an accomplishment, Alistair.

  12. 1. Floss every night; fake teeth are expensive.
    2. Small cars are overrated, or at least that’s what I told myself when we bought one and then found out we were pregnant with #4. (Good-bye Chevy Equinox, hello Toyota Sienna)
    3. Sleeping on your side is just so awesome when you have one of those body pillows you’re only supposed to use when pregnant but which become addictive. Also, it invites spooning.

Such a cute post. (It has cat pictures. Cute seemed okay as an adjective.)

    1. 1. Good for you, Jen. Flossing is one of those things you never regret, am I right?
      2. With 4 kiddos, a bitty car would be ridiculous, or pretty much impossible, especially with seat beat laws. My parents had 6 kids, but no seat belt laws back then!
      3. A body pillow. I’ve seen those. Sounds like something I should try. Who cares about proper positioning when you have a body pillow.

Cute works. How can you call my kitty anything else, even when she’s possessed.

  13. I’m a thrasher and a flosser. I did drive a tiny car until recently. It was fun to zip around but not very safe. And my husband is 6″4′, he really didn’t fit in it. Happy weekend Amy.

    1. Ha ha, a thrasher and a flosser. Sounds like this belongs in one of your poems. 🙂 My husband is also 6’4″. What do you know? He nearly hit his head in the Fiat! A little too small for him, perfect for me though. But let’s face it, not a family car either. Have a wonderful weekend!

  14. I have a tendency toward sleep apnea. To solve this, I sleep on my side with a pillow tucked behind my back. I also wear the nose bridge anti-snorers. I still don’t sleep long or well most of the time, but I don’t worry about not breathing much during my sleep.

    1. That sounds like a tough situation to work through every night. I hope the pillow tucked behind your back helps. Try as I might, I can’t seem to sleep on my back. Is that the desired position if you have sleep apnea? I hope it improves for you as sleep is so important. I don’t do very well without it! Thanks so much for stopping by, Scott.

      1. You are welcome, Amy.
Yes, side is desired for sleep apnea. It keeps the snoring down. If I understand correctly, snoring happens when your breathing is done poorly and you don’t get enough oxygen or it causes that.

  15. I’m a side sleeper, although, I try at least once per night to sleep on my back. It works until I feel like I am suffocating because I can’t breathe. When I was much younger I always slept on my tummy. My tummy was much smaller then. Things changed.

    1. It is hard to breathe while lying on your back, isn’t it? I lie like that until I can’t anymore. But, of course, if I think too much about it, I can’t sleep at all! Tummy, forget about it! I know.
